2. Jack O’ Lanterns
In the past, scary faces on the Jack O’ lanterns were used to frighten away the evil spirits and protect the household from any harm. Turnips were originally used to carve the faces but eventually the pumpkins were used. Ever since, a tradition is born. There seems to be something amiss if there is no Jack O’ lantern on Halloween Day.
It is only natural that a dark, spooky and eerie celebration would include bats which are nocturnal creatures that come out only at night. In the olden days where they celebrate Halloween with huge bonfires, bats are drawn to it, making them a common sight. As the only mammal that feeds on blood, they have been linked to vampires and death.
Witches are said to have the most power and energy on Halloween night, hence they are very much feared by people. The image of a witch flying on her broomstick is one of the most common Halloween symbols. Witches were believed to cast evil spells on children and cooking that pot of magical potion in that big cauldron.
Skeleton, being a symbol of death and disease, is used by many different cultures to represent fear of death or danger which may cause death. They are associated with Halloween as they signify the end of life.
